Think garlic bread meets cheesy dinner roll — soft inside, crisp edges, and that irresistible pull of melted cheddar. These buns are perfect to accompany any cozy fall dinner. The bread machine does the work, and all you have to do is shape, bake, and brush with garlicky butter.
Make the Dough
-
In your bread-machine basket, add warm water, olive oil, sugar, salt, garlic powder, and dried parsley.
-
Add 3 cups flour, then sprinkle in half the cheddar cheese and instant yeast on top.
-
Select the dough setting and start the cycle.
-
After a minute or two, check the texture. If the dough feels sticky, add flour 1 tablespoon at a time until a smooth ball forms — soft, but not clinging to your fingers.
-
Close the lid and let the machine finish its full dough cycle.
Shape the Rolls
-
Once the cycle is complete, remove the dough and punch it down gently.
- Sprinkle the rest of the cheddar cheese onto the dough and gently fold in.
-
Divide into 16 equal pieces and shape each into a ball.
-
Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover with a towel, and let rise for 30-45 minutes until puffy.
Bake
-
Preheat oven to 350°F (190°C).
-
In a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl, melt butter with garlic of choice and parsley.
-
Brush each roll with the garlic butter and sprinkle with a little more shredded cheddar.
-
Bake 20–25 minutes, until golden brown and the center registers 190°F (88°C).
Cool & Serve
-
Let the buns cool for 30 minutes before serving so the texture sets.
-
Brush again lightly with any leftover garlic butter if you want an extra glossy finish.
Storage
-
Room temperature: 2–3 days in an airtight container.
-
Freezer: Up to 2 months; thaw and warm in the oven at 325°F for 8–10 minutes before serving.
Tips & Variations
-
Swap cheddar for mozzarella or smoked gouda for a new flavor.
-
For pull-apart style, nestle the balls close together in a greased 9x13" pan before baking.
